Terms of use

What the site is

HeatSpec Guide republishes ductless heat pump ratings from the ENERGY STAR Certified Heat Pumps dataset published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, with the retrieval date shown, and a heat pump vs furnace calculator that does arithmetic on the figures you enter. How each figure is read and every assumption the calculator makes are on the methodology page.

Information only, not professional advice

Everything on HeatSpec Guide is general information. It is not professional, engineering, legal or financial advice, and it does not replace someone who can look at your situation.

SEER2, EER2, HSPF2, capacity and COP figures are measured under the standard test conditions used for ENERGY STAR certification. They are not a load calculation, a sizing recommendation or a prediction of what any system will do in your house or climate, and the running-cost calculator is only as good as the prices and loads you give it. Choosing, sizing and installing a heat pump, and any refrigerant or electrical work, belong with a licensed HVAC contractor working to your local code and the manufacturer's instructions. Where this site and the dataset or a manufacturer's current documentation differ, the source wins.

Accuracy and sources

Every figure is meant to match the source named beside it on the date shown. Sources change, and mistakes happen; the source's current version governs. If you find a figure that does not match its source, the contact page says how to report it.

No warranty and limitation of liability

The site and its calculators are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness and fitness for a particular purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, HeatSpec Guide is not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of, or reliance on, the site, its figures or its calculators. You are responsible for checking anything you rely on against the official source.

Independence and trademarks

HeatSpec Guide is independent and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the EPA, ENERGY STAR and the manufacturers whose equipment appears. Names and marks, including ENERGY STAR (a registered mark of the U.S. EPA) and manufacturer and model names, belong to their owners and are used only to identify what is being discussed.

Links and reuse

You may link to any page on this site. Links out go to the ENERGY STAR dataset and the other official sources it cites; those sites have their own terms and this site is not responsible for them. Quoting a figure with a link back is welcome; reproducing the data tables or pages in bulk needs permission, requested at hello@heatspecguide.com.
